Job description
We have a new and exciting opportunity for recent graduates to work with us here at Abbey School! We are currently offering a bespoke graduate recruitment training programme to work with our highly skilled team of staff for three weeks in July 2023. This is for graduates who have a degree in a relevant field and who have a passion for special educational needs.
Whilst in post on the graduate programme you will be immersed in our comprehensive induction training that has been designed in strategic partnership with two leading UK universities, and you will also shadow and observe our staff supporting pupils in the classrooms. You will learn about the roles of our behaviour analysts, occupational therapist, and speech and language therapist, and how they work together with our teachers to deliver the highest quality of education for our pupils. Our staff team work together to assess each pupil’s strengths and development areas, prioritise targets and design personalised learning support plans for all pupils. It is such a fantastic opportunity that we are offering a training programme for graduates to observe, experience and learn what our highly skilled team of staff deliver.
The aim of this programme is to give keen graduates the training and experience shadowing pupil facing staff throughout the whole school day, with the goal of becoming a full-time permanent Learning Mentor at Abbey School for a 4th September 2023 start date. Candidates who will be successfully enrolled onto this programme must have the intention that they will commit to the full time Learning Mentor role at the end of the programme. For further information about our Learning Mentor role please see the Learning Mentor job post on our website.
As part of the three week programme, you will shadow our Learning Mentors who work with pupils both individually and in small groups supporting them to overcome barriers to learning, delivering teaching, providing positive behaviour support and delivering other focused interventions. You will also benefit from observing our teachers whilst in class, who are responsible for planning, delivering, monitoring and assessing teaching and learning for their class group. You will learn from shadowing how to support children and young people with autism whom may have additional needs, and you will also learn about our school vision and ethos, and our BAGS framework.
This brilliant opportunity will give graduates a wealth of ground breaking evidence-based knowledge and training, both theory and practical. We are a unique school that is experiencing a period of growth, and so we are looking to share our knowledge and outstanding practices with graduates who are looking to develop a career within special educational needs.

How to apply?
This training programme will take place between 3rd July 2023 – 21st July 2023 and successful graduates will be paid £1200.00 for this three week programme. It is important that you attend all dates of the training programme. Graduate Learning Mentor’s will have weekly check-ins, and the conditional offer of a permanent role is dependent on progress over the three week period and class feedback.
If you are offered a permanent role at the end of this training programme you will be given a £500 retainer fee for over the summer holidays in August, and when you return in September as a full-time employee your salary will be based on the Learning Mentor job description, starting at £22,418 per year. The salary will be split evenly between 12 months, and you will only be required to work during school term time (having half terms, Easter, Summer, and Christmas off as paid holidays).
